PGA Tour - Barclays Tournament; Matt Kuchar takes over Martin Laird and Tiger Woods
Matt Kuchar the 32-year-old Georgia Tech graduate, walked at the Barclays, thinking he’d probably be congratulating Martin Laird who was topping the leader board. However, a few hours later, he turns out to be one being celebrated.
He stunned everyone last afternoon after he started off with a 7-iron, getting the golf ball out of the rough, sending it to the green, where it smoothly turned towards the whole leaving it not more than 25 inches away from a birdie.
Kuchar explained the shot to be “beautiful,” I ran it up to that back right bank and saw the crowd just all of a sudden ... like a wave of people standing and cheering. I knew it was getting good. That was an exciting way to cap off this tournament,” he said.
In the final round he was only five shots behind the Laird. However, after Laird made a three-putt bogey being only twenty-five feet away from the hole, Kuchar caught up.
The victory was Kuchar’s as he put the final hole and said "To win, it's an incredible year. There's nothing like the feeling of winning a PGA Tour golf tournament. You feel like you're the best player in the world for this week. It's just an amazing feeling to think there are 125 of the best players in the world this week, and I came out first."
Matt Kuchar finished in the top 10s all of this year, as he was recognized as a solid player. The victory has given him the top spot at the FedEx cup standings, earning $10 million. He is hoping to land in the world top 10 ranking soon after this season’s performance.
On the other hand, Tiger Woods is progressing, after having a rough horrific year for the World No.1 golfer. He tied for a 12th spot in the championship making a huge comeback after his embarrassing finish in June at the 78th position Bridgestone Invitational.
Martin Laird told the reporters it was certainly not the finish he was looking for, but he was proud of the way he played finishing. He also said it was a battling day for him, but he was content with his performance as he had made the biggest putts of his life.
"I knew I had a chance of Martin only making par on 17. I thought that was probably my best chance. And once he hit that great shot just to the back fringe on 18, I was pretty much shutting down my practice session. I went over and just was a spectator thinking that he's got this wrapped up." Kuchar said.
