PGA Tour Championship betting odds preview: Phil Mickelson is favourite
Phil Mickelson has come in as the favourite to win the PGA’s Tour Championship this weekend. Mickelson won the event last year, and now sits as the 7-1 favourite to repeat as champion.
In the event last year Mickelson went into the final day four strokes back of Kenny Parry and two strokes back of Tiger Woods. Perry took himself out of contention, hitting four-over par while Woods was
even on the day. Mickelson hit five-under to improve his score in the tournament to nine-under, good enough for the win. Woods took second with a score of six-under. It was Mickelson’s second career Tour Championship win.
Mickelson currently sits in 10th place in the FedEx Cup standings, but despite the ranking a win at the Tour Championship could give him the FedEx Cup (depending on how other finallists finish),
and the $10 million prize that goes along with it.
There is some concern that Mickelson is suffering from arthritis which could impact his play, and seriously hinder his chances of winning the tournament.
Mickelson’s only victory to date so far this year was the Masters, it was his third Masters Tournament victory of his career. He has 49 professional wins so far in his career, 38 of those wins came on
the PGA Tour.
Behind Mickelson with 8-1 odds are Steve Stricker and Dustin Johnson. Johnson is second in the FedEx Cup standings after winning the BMW Championship last week, his second victory of the season. Stricker
sits in fourth place with two wins so far this season: the Northern Trust Open, and the John Deere Classic.
Matt Kuchar sits on top of the FedEx Cup standings, and is 10-1 to win the Tour Championship. His only victory of the season was The Barclays, but he leads all golfers with 11 top ten finishes this year.
Kuchar has gotten better each year since he made the PGA Tour in 2007, and with a victory at the Tour Championship he could be well on his way to becoming one of the PGA’s best.
Paul Casey hit three bogeys on the back nine at the BMW Championship, allowing Johnson to take the lead and the win. He has yet to win this year, and has only one PGA Tour career win. He is holding fifth
place in the FedEx standings, and has 12-1 odds to win the Tour Championship.
Jim Furyk, 11th in FedEx Cup points, and Adam Scott, 14th, are both 15-1 to win the Tour Championship. Furyk has already won the Transitions Championship and the Verizon Heritage
this season, and Scott is a strong golfer who won the Valero Texas Open this season.
The top 30 golfers in the Fedex Cup standings qualify for the Tour Championship. Tiger Woods finished in 15th at the BMW Championship on 12 September, moving him up to 42nd in the
standings. It is the first time in his career that he failed to qualify for a tournament.
After the Tour Championship this weekend there will be the Ryder Cup on 3 October, and five events that make up the Fall Series, starting with the Viking Classic on 3 October.
