PGA Tour emerges victorious at Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge after a dramatic finish
A playoff was needed to settle the duel between the PGA Tour team and the LPGA team. It was an interesting last day in Nevada, as the battle between PGA, LPGA and the Champions tour teams heated up.
Jason Day, with his birdie on the second hole, settled the contest, as he defeated Stacy Lewis.
The Australian, Day’s first shot landed in an awkward position but his magnificent iron work saved the day. He hit a beautiful 95-yard approach, which landed within 5 feet from the pin.
"Actually, I had no idea where it finished," Day said. "And I was very fortunate to finish on the cart path".
Lewis, on the other hand, missed an 8-foot putter on the second hole. It seemed to be a straight forward putt but Stacy could not get her calculations right. She missed the pin by a whisker.
"I thought it was pretty straight," said Lewis. "but it kind of moved a little left on me".
Lewis is the current LPGA Tour player of the year. Moreover, she has also emerged as a winner four times during this season alone.
Davis Love III wore the PGA tour team jersey, whereas Natalie Gulbis showed her class from the LPGA team.
Only the best score from the three-player teams is counted at the Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge.
"The women went 14 under on the back nine, but Nick holed a great, great putt to tie it," Day said. "Nick and I birdied the 18th and Davis birdied the 17th".
Jason Day was the most successful among all the players, as he shot nine birdies for the day. Nick Watney and Lewis followed the Australian with eight birdies each.
The hole of the day was probably shot by Gulbis, as she eagled the par-5 15th. Natalie Gulbis holed in a 30-yard chip and it was the only eagle throughout the day.
"Stacy started making a lot of birdies and Natalie had that chip-in on the 15th, and that got them going," Love said.
This was the ninth victory on the 21-events for the PGA tour. They also earned a good amount of $500,000. The tournament also raised $3,442,300 for the charity, Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.
