PGA Tour money to be valid for one more year
Initially, it was planned that the PGA Tour money will not be valid to earn cards for next season. However, after a long overview of the scenario, the PGA has decided to extent the money list to be valid for one more year.
It was planned that only the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings will be earning a spot in the next year’s PGA Tour.
The next 75 were to be given a card for Web.com tour. From those three finales, the next fifty tour cards will be determined. This meant that the 2013 season would have been short, from January till August.
There are players, such as David Mathis, who are not in the top 125 standings of FedEx Cup but they are inside the top 125 when it comes to the money list.
''Typically, what we've found in researching this is there's an average of a six- to seven-player difference in the two lists,'' said Andy Pazder, the tour's Chief of Operations.
''Of the difference in the two lists, about half those folks have some higher status, such as a winner's exemption or medical exemption''.
This redemption is only for a year and next year, the tour board will again decide whether to keep both the lists or not.
''The net effect is somewhere between 128 and 129 getting their cards, so it doesn't have a huge impact,'' Pazder said.
There are players who are well inside FedEx Cup standings but they are way off in tour money list. Heath Slocum is one example, he is currently 124th in the FedEx Cup standings but he is 142nd in money tour list.
Slocum did not even finish once inside top ten this season, his best finish was in Mississippi, where he finished thirteenth.
The thumb rule for the players from now on should be consistency no matter how big or small the prize is. If they are consistent enough then they will earn a tour card for next season.
Brendan Steele, Jhonattan Vegas and Retief Goosen missed the playoffs because they were not inside the top 125. However, in the tour money standings they were well with in 125.
