PGA declares BMW Championship as the Tournament of the Year
PGA Tour has named BMW Championship as the Tournament of the Year. The competition for the award was very tough as there were numerous contenders. However, the authorities decided to name the penultimate event of the FedEx Cup as the ultimate winner.
The tournament was won by Rory McIlroy, as he carded his second consecutive win in the FedEx Cup playoffs. The event attracted record crowds to the course. 143,000 spectators took to Crooked Stick Golf Club during the course of four days.
Rory McIlroy was named player of the year largely due to his FedEx Cup playoff performances.
The 2012 BMW Championship raised more than $3.1 million for the Evans Scholars Foundation. The Evans Scholars Foundation works for the betterment of the caddies, it has been sending caddies to colleges since 1930.
Andy Pazder, PGA TOUR Executive Vice-president and Chief of Operations, congratulated the BMW Championship management and Western Golf Association for hosting such a marvellous event.
"On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I am pleased to acknowledge and congratulate the BMW Championship and the Western Golf Association on an outstanding event and to recognize the tournament team for its outstanding efforts," said Andy Pazder.
The award was presented on PGA TOUR Tournament Meetings in La Quinta.
WGA’s Vice President, Vince Pellegrino was extremely happy after receiving this award.
"On behalf of BMW of North America and the Western Golf Association, I would like to thank the PGA TOUR for honouring the BMW Championship as Tournament of the Year," said Pellegrino.
He also thanked the tournament sponsors, BMW for their magnificent support.
"Much of the credit for this honour should go to BMW, because its unparalleled commitment to excellence sets high standards for the event at every level of execution," Pellegrino said.
BMW has been very dynamic in their support and sponsorship throughout these years. The vehicles displays on the course have also attracted many crowds to the course and they have also been awarding scholarships to Evans Scholars Foundation.
It is not the first time that this event has received this award/. Back in 2008 as well, the BMW Championship was named Tournament of the Year.
