PGA tour golfer Ricky Barnes impressed by New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick - NFL News
New England Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick lost the Super Bowl XLVI once again to the New York Giants and took some quality time off from football for some rest and recreation.
The three-time Super Bowl winner took part last weekend in the AT&T Pro-Am golf tournament to relax and to everyone surprise he turned out to be pretty good at it.
Belichick partnered with PGA Tour player Ricky Barnes for the tournament and according to the golfer, the Patriots’ coach was a brilliant student.
“On most of the shots, he would (say), 'Ricky, what do you think I should do here?' ”Barnes told the
Boston Herald this week. “And I would say, 'Grab this club, hit it here.'”
The 59-year-old, and his partner ended the tournament at third place, just two strokes shy of the winners and the result was somewhat a repeat of the Super Bowl with Belichick getting so close to victory yet ending up short.
Barnes though had nothing but praise for Belichick and he was more than impressed by his ability to really use advice and make changes as necessary to his game.
“He’s got a consistent ball flight, an easy guy to club and see how he’s going to do it. The guy got better each and every day. He was able to correct things himself just being an athlete. And that’s probably the most impressive thing of all.”
Belichick coached the Patriots’ to their fifth Super Bowl game during his tenure. New England was one of the favourites to lift another title this season after going 13-3 in the regular season.
They crushed Denver Broncos 45-10 in the division round and went on to claim the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship with a 23-20 win over Baltimore Ravens.
The Patriots were odds on favourite to lift the Lombardi Trophy but could not perform against a gritty and uncompromising New York Giants.
New England lost the game 21-17 in a repeat of their 2007 defeat at the same stage to the Giants.
Belichick’s golf therapy will do him some good to get over another season which promised so much yet failed to deliver and the Patriots will be ready to make another push for the Super Bowl when the 2012-13 season gets underway.
