PGA tour success and financial rewards
In some instances, one may get something without having to try for it. It was evident at the Barclays Cup on Thursday, which is part of the U.S. tours’ FedEx Cup.
The Barclays Cup started on Thursday in New York. The FedEx Cup is held for a six week golf treat, and includes some of the very top players in golf. At the Tillinghast’s Ridgewood arena, these players returned to prove their prowess over one another. For the current event, a full of 18 hole running is checked in.
The high financials that the FedEx Cup leads to is worth mentioning. Many critics in the current scenario have been deliberating on the European Ryder Cup. After weighing all the positives and negatives, one cannot fathom the amount of money that players earn in the tournament. Team selection as a result becomes highly controversial and Colin Montgomerie is under the scanner.
Apart from the treasure earnings of not playing any gold, bonus money come out to be another bonus for the players. This play off reward is an endowment for the poor souls who didn’t win. In the 2009 FedEx Cup, the runners up received an amount of $3 million with the third, fourth and fifth place finishers earning $2, $1.5 and $1 million respectively.
Having said that, the one, the only, Tiger Woods cannot be ignored. If he can win 6 more FedEx Cup’s, this golfer would have a retirement fund amounting to $1 billion. The player standing at the top ten receive the bonuses upfront. It means that the FedEx champion received the payment of $9 million upfront with $1 million in his retirement account only
According to some critics, these are gifts that just keep on coming.
Now let us consider the players that didn’t show up. If the absentees did not compete, the modest amount they would be receiving will be $32,000. The golfers having the honour of topping the list includes Woods, Mickelson and Singh with $20.1 million, $5.2 million and $10.5 million respectively. Furyk, Johnson and Choi stand at $1.5 million respectively.
Current leader board Vaughn Taylor is at the top place with a -6 along with Tiger Woods with 65 strokes. The much pursued Adam Scott stands with a -5 at 66 strokes. If Adam Scott would have putted the bogey in the final hole, he might have played with the leads at Ridgewood Country Club. The presenters of the show had labelled the game as the Tiger Show. Adam Scott is in dire need of playing some putts which can match that of Tiger Woods.
Let’s take a look at the Europeans successes as well. Garcia, Donald and Peterson top the list with $2.6 million, $410,000 and $210,000 respectively. The current event does not however include some of the players due to DQs and several other reasons. Furyk, Garcia, Pavin and Goydos this week will not be seen in action.
The FedEx Cup is part of the PGA Tour. Most players strive to be part of the 125 member list in a bid to gain 2500 points. This is not typical as compared to other regular seasons where the points are half of what the FedEx Cup holds. The third playoff event allows only the top 30 players to move to the final event where the points are reset. The playoff events include the Barclays, the Deutsche bank Championship, the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship.
