PGE Skra wins against Budva but falls short of one point from holding top slot in Pool F
With colossal support of avid Polish fans, the men’s volleyball team of Poland PGE Skra Belchatow worked out a great win against Montenegro’s Budvanska Rivijera Budva on Wednesday night.
The totally sold out Palace of Sport in Lodz, Poland hosted the match, which ended with the set scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-17. PGE Skra pulled off success in the crucial match but missed the top slot in Pool F with a minor deficit. Polish team earned 14
points at the end of league round, while Tours VB of France held the top spot with a total of 15 points.
PGE Skra played the match without its two key players Daniel Plinski and Michal Winiarski but still managed to clinch success in straight sets.
In the absence of Plinski and Winiarski, the opposite Atanasijevic Aleksandar captured huge limelight and received much applause from the spectators for his wonderful performance. He added 16 points and emerged as the most effective player in the match.
Raic was top scorer on Montenegrin side as he contributed 11 points and he was the only player in his team to go into double-digit scores.
The Polish team opened the match on a strong footing and incorporated powerful serves. They set the tone for the competition with 12-7 lead, which forced the head coach of opposite team to call a timeout. The players of both teams sat down during the timeout
and discussed the prospects of upcoming play.
As the teams returned on the centre court, PGE Skra continued with its winning ways and remained consistent in hitting point-scoring shots. Poles took the scores to 18-10 and did not allow Montenegrin side to come up. Budva failed to match its performance
with PGE Skra and dropped the first set (16-25).
The following set unfolded the same story. Poland picked up an early lead and maintained its power play until the finish line. Budva could only score 15 points in second set and gave way to Poland lead of 2-0.
In the third set, Budva scored the first point but lagged behind Poland from that point onward. PGE Skra took the lead at 2-1 and then remained ahead of Budva all the way until 25-17. The result of the match was out in 68th minute of the game,
while Poles celebrated the victory.
PGE Skra coach Jacek Nawrocki seemed delighted about the victory. He expressed his emotions in the following manner, “I am proud of my team. The players showed great motivation, they did not let the opponent stay in contact. We played extremely well in defense
and there was no moment of relaxation. Everybody kept fighting and digging for each ball and this makes me happy.”
