Friend:(glances at phone) Incoming call 416-555-5555, "i will not pick up."

Me: no answer... hmmm... hangs up

Friend: "wait a second, i know him!", (glances at phone and presses redial) ... 1-416-555-5555. Call cannot be made due to long distance...

We live 1 block away from each other...? why do i have the 1 in front of his number? i cant call now?? Thats stupid? Any tips??

  1. Might be some type of glitch with your phone company, give them  call.

  2. Ok.. I am confused with this... Was he trying to call you back but couldn't because it was long distance? Or were you trying to call for a 2nd time but this time instead of ringing it gave you that recording about long distance?... If he can't call you because of long distance then that's the problem... he has no long distance... regardless of how close you live together.. It's all how the calls are determined by the local phone company. You may be on separate central offices and may be considered intra lata, aka local toll... which is billed at a long distance rate.

  3. Your caller ID doesn't know he is only one block away.  All it knows is the full number, which includes country code (1) and area code (416).

I use VoIP for all my calling.  And, all my calls require the full number to be dialed, including 1(area code), even when I dial next door.

You may be able to edit your phone's contact list to edit how the contact is dialed..., but depends on your particular phone and how it handles caller-ID and contacts.

  4. Learn to dial a phone

  5. Any phone number with area code 416 and 647 can't be a long distant call if you also have the same area code.
