A person jumps from a fourth-story window 15.0m above a firefighter's safety net. The survivor stretches the net 1.0m before coming to rest. a) What was the average deceleration experienced by the survivor when she was slowed to rest by the net? b) What would you do to make it "safer" (that is, to generate a smaller deceleration): would you stiffen or loosen the net? explain.

  2. a) d= 0.5at^2

    15=4.9t^2

    t= 1.749635531

    impact speed = 1.749635531 * 9.8 = 17.1464282 m/s

    her average velocity is 8.5732141

    d= vt

    1= 8.5732141*t

    t= 0.116642368

    a=v/t

    a=17.1464282 / 0.116642368

    a= 147 m/s^2

    so deceleration is 147m/s^2

    b) to make it safer lossen the net to allow survivor to travel greater distance and hence take more time to stop so it will decrease deceleration
