My baby cooter (water turtle) is acting really wierd and I am scared that he is ill. He wont eat anything and is not active and is spending most of his time on the floating dock. I have had him for 3 months and I know how to take care of water turtles (I have a filter, water heater, floating dock, large aquarium, heat lamp, proper diet of krill, commercial food, apples, and lettuce, and sometimes fish....) He also keeps doing this thing with his mouth where he opens it and looks like he is trying to make some kind of noise but he cant. PLEASE help!

  1. I have had 2 for 36 yrs now plus a 7 yr old and a 5 yr old. This is how I have taken care of them for 36 yrs. Great pets.

I have had them in a stand alone 150gal pond from sears..for about 6 yrs now..

Here is some important and a lot of info. If he or she is small get feeder guppies or small feeder goldfish, frozen brown worms ..or live brown worms from a fish store. petco and or petsmart do not carry live worms..

is his enviroment big enough for him? Maybe he is lonely and bored with no fish to catch..put 6 or more feeder goldfish in his tank and he 'll start movin.

  2. most water turtles who act in this way are showing signs of a respiratory infection, this can either be caused by a lack of vit A or the temp in the enclosure is too low it should be 75* -80* also the problem with cooters is they are really messy so a water change is often required even if you have a filter, check the water temp and the temp of the enclosure, you also need to feed your cooter a good calcium supplement These can be fed in a "turtle meat-loaf", consisting of 1 teaspoonful of calcium carbonate and 1 tablespoon vitamins mixed with 1 lb of very lean ground beef. Turtle meat-loaf can be made in advance, and stored frozen in serving size portions. Defrost it thoroughly prior to feeding. if the raise in temp and the extra vitamins don't work yo may need to take your cooter to a vet for antibiotics, but it is always advisable to get a turtle who you think is sick checked over by a herp vet,  in the source box is a web site that has some really good information on turtle care and diet which you may find useful, best of luck honey hope your cooter is feeling better soon.
