Someone please help me. My dwarf hamster had 4 babies 9 days ago. Today 2 of them were found dead. The hamster mother is really really skinny. And I mean really really skinny. Well my family and I went shopping for abount an hour and a half. When I got home, she wasn't feeding her kids. She was up in another compartment. I accidentally took the compartment thing out and when I put it back, I think I accidentally squashed her foot or her tail. But I'm afraid my hamster might die. I'm afraid her kids might die too. Right now I'm literally crying. When she wasn't feeding her kids, I hand fed them. I gave them wheat bread with skim milk. Well now she is feeding her kids again. Also her one eye looks kinda weird. She keeps scratching it and the outside part looks dark around the rim. What can I do to help her gain weight? What's wrong with her eye? EVERYBODY HELP!!!!!!!!!

  1. OMG!!! Bless your heart! Definatly call a vet....any vet ASAP!! My old chiuahua dog did something simular to this. The vet said she had milk fever meaning the babies sucked every bit of the calcium out of her body. Dont know if the same could happen to hamsters or not though. Just PLEASE call a vet, most will give free info on what to do over the phone.

  2. you should go to the vet and get them check out or

for something cheaper go to the pet store where you got her from and see if they can check em out

ps: i hope your hamsters will get better!!!

  3. Ok, you can't do much. DO NOT hand feed the babies UNLESS the mother dies. Feed the mother a hard boiled egg, but only the white part and in small chunks. Hard boiled eggs are not a regular meal for hamsters, only give a small amount to her about twice a week. Or more if you feel she needs it. Feed her this until she regains her strength. You can't do much about the babies though, you have to let the mother do her job. You can also feed the mother Yeast is rich in Vitamin B which acts on the nervous system and is extremely effective in reducing stress. (Stress is the primary cause of many hamster diseases, in particular wet tail.) Feeding yeast once a week could very well be one of the greatest preventative measures for many illnesses. Give a pinch of nutritional yeast once a week. (Nutritional yeast, found in health food stores, isn't bitter like baker's yeast and your hamster will relish the flavor.) As an alternative, one-half of a yeast tablet found in pet shops for dogs and cats can be fed once a week. (When feeding your hamster yeast tablets, use plain tablets; not those with garlic since garlic is hard on a hamsters' kidneys.) Carbs and fat provide energy and warmth; but if fed in excess are stored in the body as fat, which can cause breeding problems and ill health. Carbohydrates are found in sugar, yeast, potato and milk. Both carbohydrates and fat are found in barley, corn, oats and wheat. So those will also help with the mother. Do not touch the babies until their eyes are open and they have fur. Which is between 21-28 days. At that age you need to separate the sexes.

    Good Luck!

  4. Call your vet and tell her the problem.

She'll either tell you to bring them in, or she'll give you instructions.

    This is crucial!

If you don't have a vet, look one up on the web. Please do it if you want to save your hamster's life!

  5. You should definately take them to the vet it sounds very crucial. I had hampsters before but the biggest problem that I had was I had to take the dad out(obviously).

  6. sounds like she had difficulty giving birth. she probably is trying to get her energy & food back before she can be able 2 give some to her babies. im not sure what is wrong with her eye but i would have a vet look @ it if it keeps bothering her, the feee shouldn't be to high for that. gaining wait should be easy, if ur hamster corroperates. just make sure she always has plenty of food& maybe give her a few extra treats. i have no idea how to feed the babies, if there like dogs, maybe u can find a milk formula for babys to drink out of a bowl or something. GOOD LUCK!!!

  7. i'm crying too

  8. Def. need to take it in to an animal hospital. Immediately. Or, if that isn't possible, call around to a pet store in your area and tell them what is going on and see what they say. I had this problem before with my dwarf hamster, I think it actually ate one of it's babies, and I have no idea why. She had food and everything... yeah I'd definitely take them all into the animal hospital as soon as possible. If she isn't feeding them, you can't make her, and they'll certainly die because they're so young. You can't make her eat, either, if shes getting thinner. But a vet will be able to get her and the babies nutrition, possibly by giving them a shot or something. Do NOT feed the babies any more human food, you never know what is poisonous to them or could make them sick. Good luck, I hope you get this taken care of.

  9. well, to fatten her up, put some extra sunflower seeds in her food. the seeds are like cupcakes to a hamster. just don't touch the babies!!!!!!!! there is nothing you can do if she won't feed the babies. ii really suggest CALLING a vet and asking for there opinion. i am not really knowledgeable in breeding and caring for hamster babies.
