I just bought a green Indian ring neck parakeet 3 days ago. he is around 6-8 months old. when i approach him he either runs away and when i let him outside of his cage he hides underneath or behind the coach. i have clipped his wings already because the owner of the pet shop says that these birds as soon as they see freedom and have their wings grown back will fly away. the owner also says that these birds are really hard to tame. Is it true? how should i approach the bird so he gets used to me and will he really fly away if he gets the chance to? please help. thanks

  1. when not tamed, yes he will fly away. don't let him out of his cage until he is tame because it will be stressful for you and your bird trying to catch him again. taming him will be hard, and even if he doesn't bit now, you probably will get bit in the future during the taming process. start off by just sitting by his cage everyday for about half and hour talking gently to him, singing, humming, and offering him treats through the bars of the cage. at first he will try to be as far away from you as possible, so after half an hour of trying, just set it in his food bowl and try again the next day. DONT RUSH YOUR BIRD by grabbing it or forcing out of the cage any way.let your new feathered friend take its time or it will become stressed, bite, and be a fearful bird and much harder to tame.after sitting by the cage and doing the things i mentioned your bird should eventually come and take the treat. it may take days or it may take weeks, but it will eventually happen. when it gets to the point that when you sit down and your bird comes to the perch closest to you expecting a treat. DO NOT open the cage except for changing your birds food and water until this stage in the taming process in complete!!! then you can open the cage, put your hand inside with the treat on your palm, and wait.this is the time that you will most likely get bitten. do not make a big fuss about it or yell or scream or complain because that is the reaction that your bird is looking for. just remain calm and try again. if you are uncomfortable, then try again later or the next day. next, the bird may come and sit on your hand and take the treat, or it may be frightened and coward away from you. but every day do this and wait and eventually the bird will come and sit on your hand and take then treat. after the bird takes the treat, DON'T try to pick it up or take it out or anything, just tell it thats its a good bird and then remove your hand and shut the door and go about your business. once your bird comes to your hand quickly every time you put your hand in its cage then you can teach it to step up. get a branch and gently push it agnst your birds chest and saying "step up". your bird should either step up onto it or be frightened and try to fly away. if it flys away then try the next day and keep on trying until it steps up. if it steps up, then tell it that its such a good bird and pet it and bring it out of the cage and then do the same with your finger once it is out of the cage and it will step up onto your finger. after petting it, giving it a treat, and talking to it put it back in the cage. after you can do this whenever you want to and your bird comes and steps up to your finger, you can consider your bird tamed! hope i helped and good luck with your new pet!=D
