PLEASE HELP!!!! I am trying to remember a childrens fantasy programme in the mold of jim hensons storyteller?

it was on british television years ago, all i remember is it was centered around a boy with either a magic box or a magic ring. there was also some sort of bird of prey, eagle, falcon not sure which. it was fantastic entetainment in the mold of jim hensons the storyteller/lion, witch and the wardrobe type things but it was neither of these. i believe it may have been shown around christmas time but i may be wrong. this programme was on at least (if memory serves me correct) 15+years ago. PLEASE GIVE ME ANY SUGGESTIONS I WILL FOLLOW THEM UP. THANKS ALL.

Could it have been "The box of delights" written by John Masefield. It was adapted into a fantasy series on the BBC which was based around Christmas time. The central character was called Kay Harker but I'm not sure who the actor was. I used to love it when I was a little girl and I'm actually reading the book now lol.

Funnily enough, one of the children's channels did a rerun a couple of years ago.
