I need to know from someone who either lives in Athens or someone who travels on train often. I am trying to fly into the Athens Airport and then go to Thessaloniki Greece. I would like to go with the cheapest method, which I assume would be bus or train. Id rather go whichever way has less stops. I need to know:

1) Is there a train station @ the Athens Airport and if so what is it called?

2) If there is not, how far is the train station?

3) Is there a website to look at the times for departures of the train (and if in English would be great!)

I am worried about getting lost. My family lives in Thessloniki. I cant afford to buy a plane ticket so I am trying to get there and keep it a suprise without getting lost! PLEASE PLEASE any help that is accurate from experience would be great! thank you so much!!

  1. You can check prices for the express train (intercity/express)  at www.ose.gr

Bus is the longest way.Trains tend to be crowded and slow, so look for the express

Traveling by plane is not bad either, there are 2 airlines that fly Athens to Thessaloniki. Check them out:

    http://www.aegeanair.com/

    or

    http://www.olympicairlines.com/

Olympic has some rock bottom prices, 50 euros each way, so it almost beats any train ticket.

    Good luck

  2. First of all you must make a reservation if you travel by train beforehand, since it is very common not to be able to find a ticket. The train station is called Stathmos Larissis(Larissa station), and yes it is far. Look down for a pic to help you out, since you can use Metro for your transportation from the airport. From metro line 3 you change to line 2 in Syntagma going towards agios Antonios, and stop at Larissa station. Look down for the webpage of the trains organization.

  3. There is also a bus heading toward Istanbul that goes directly to Thessaloniki without stopping that leaves from the same station every day at around 7 pm. The price is almost the same, maybe the difference of €1, but I know at least in the Spring, the bus is nearly empty every day so you don't really require reservations.

You can easily get to Stathmos Larrisos, or Larissa Station, from the metro that leaves Athens airport. You will transfer at Syntagma station.
