Harry drew near the fire, and he nearly singed his jacket.

No italics showed up on my screen, but I imagine it's the first clause that you need to change, right?  So it could be "As Harry drew near the fire, he nearly singed his jacket."  There are other possibilities, such as a different subordinating conjunction or more extensive rewriting, such as "Harry drew so near the fire that he nearly singed his jacket."
