I have a 10 gallon tank with 3 mollies, 3 cories, and 1 dwarf gourami. I have 2 spotted cories and 1 green cory. I just got the green cory and 1 of the spotted today. The 2 spotted cories hang out, just like a small school, but the green cory doesn't seem to want to be in a school. They'll cross paths, but won't the he won't follow the two like a school should. Cories do except other types of cories, right? Is this normal?

  1. huh??

  2. Being a different strain, the green may not want to school with the other spotteds.  You might want to consider either getting another green, or returning the green you have and getting a third spotted.  Although you should definitely stop stocking your tank.  You need to allow one gallon per inch of fish; and you already have seven in there.  Some strains of mollies can grow up to four inches long; so just those three, if they grow that big, would overstock your tank!!

  3. cories, as well as other schooling fish, will only school with their own kind

  4. Just give the cory a bit to settle in and if he doesnt get another cory

  5. maybe he is an extra male and not allowed to join the school

  6. Cories are shoaling fish not schooling fish, this means that unlike tetras they will wander off and hang out alone at times. I have two bronze cories, two panda cories and a spotted cory and they hang out sometimes or they shoal in different areas of the tank.

  7. Normally a fish will want to stay with the same color and species. I fell certain that they wont school but if you get another green cory then the greens will school. You might also want to look in buying a bigger tank because soon you will start to have nitrate problems but if you fell that you can get by with the one you have then feed the fish once daily and do a 10% water change every two weeks.
