  1. People get the word "cycled" confused all the time. When you mean cycle do you mean "The Nitrogen Cycle" or how long to let your tank run before having fish in it? If you are talking about the first one then you should do a fishless cycle which means to put in something like fish food in an empty tank to get it to completely cycle without harming any fish. This usually takes about 4-8 weeks on average. If you are talking about just letting your tank run you can put them in as soon as your tank meets the fish's ideal parameters but if it helps you sleep at night you can let it run for 24 hours before adding fish.

As for fish tips the best tip I could give you is just pay close to attention to your fish and research them thoroughly before getting them.

  2. About a week to cycle the tank... JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EITHER 2 MALE GUPPIES AND 2 MALE PLATYS OR 2 FEMALE GUPPIES AND 2 FEMALE PLATYS, THEY WILL BREED! oh and what size tank?

  3. takes two weeks m8, ignore everyone else, been a pro breeder for 20+ years....

i'd suggest just buying one pair to start off with then add a few more a week or so later, u dont want to be buying alot of fish together to find them all dead the next day due to a unforseen problem...

may i suggest a basic sponge filter and airpump, very cheap and cheap to run perfect for a new small tank set-up, you'll need some plants too, java moss/java ferns are ideal for beginners as they are very hardy, the fish will love them too. i always add some live food to help new fish settle in but you might want to try some frozen daphnia or bloodworm.

    hope this helps!

  4. Get absolutely everything you'll need for the tank before you get the fish.

Let it run with the filter, decorations and such for at least 48 hours but better for a week.
