Question:

PLEASE HELP ME WITH MY BUDGIE!?

In the past month or so my budgie has now laid 10 eggs! There used to be a male but the male died so i don't know if the eggs are fertile or not. Just the other day my mom put all the eggs in a basket on table. But my bird accidentally pushed the basket off the table so now all of the eggs broke except for 2. I was crying so hard:( My mom cleaned it up and she told me she saw red vines around the yoke. Does that mean the eggs are fertile? And also, does laying too many eggs shorten a bird/budgie's life? If i give it enough cuttlebone will it still shorten its life? Please help. I don't EVER want my budgie to die. She's been with me for 2 years and I love her so much! Best answer will be chosen. And voters out there please vote!

  1. u need a cuttlebone, and to make shure, hold the eggs up to a bright light if u see red veins they are probably fertile but if the mother doesnt sit on them, she knows if they are fertile if not she wont sit on them.

  2. The eggs probably not going to be fertile unless it has a mate.Laying eggs and giving her cuttlebone won't shorten her life in fact the cuttlebone helps her because a bird can get egg binding it's when she can't pass a egg through her cloaca.

Let your bird sit on the egg until she loses interest in it if you remove it she'll just lay more eggs.

  3. well, so far nobody in answers told you what you really need to know, so here you go, she needs to quit laying eggs now, because theres no male, so theres no point in her laying eggs.

    1. shorten the day length

    2. take away any place she nests in, and dont let her have nesting material

    3. limit your petting her to her head

    4. provide her with cuttle bone and a nutritious diet of fruits and veggies

this should stop the egg laying

red vines around the egg usually mean they were fertile at first but the chick never grew because it wasn't incubated. Egg laying wont shorten its life, but take note

IT WILL if you let your bird get out of control. More than 4 clutches (ie more than 16 eggs per year) is considered excesive and your bird is a chronic egg layer if it does this. Chronic egg laying depletes the calcium in a bird's body. If birds run out of calcium, they will start pulling it from their own bones, causing fractures and broken legs.

let your budgie cool down for a while

if you decide to breed her, wait at least 6 months, then get a mate for her. right now she needs to get her system back in order.

the only reason you need to worry right now is if she appears sick or if she is straining to lay an egg.

  4. The eggs probably wont be fertile, and if your budgie hasn't been sitting on them, then they definitely wouldn't hatch And laying eggs wont shorten her life at all, no different to chickens really.
