I came home from the store about 15 minutes ago, saw on the deck through the sliding door a bird laying down with its back to me. i think it is hurt or stuck in the deck!

i knocked on the door to see if it is alive and it is, thank god - it moved its head, but did not fly away. that is why i think something's wrong.

what should i do!? i dont want it to die.

should i do something like throw food? i'm not sure if i should go outside to approach it because i dont want to scare it.

thank you! please answer quickly!

  1. awww poor little bird! ='(

    Call your local animal control immediately! If it is a big bird, like a Blue Jay or a Crow/Raven, don't pick it up!!! They bite because they are frightened. If it's a small house finch or something, I would get gloves for protection, and pick it up, so it will be out of the way from getting hurt(like if you have other pets like a dog or cat, I would put it somewhere safe where they can't get it, like in a room where they can't get in. Check it gently for any broken wings or unusual things, like if it's foot is twisted or if it's bleeding. if it has a broken neck, there is nothing you can do for it. try giving it food and water while waiting for animal control to arrive(if it can walk or move)

    If, when you approach the bird, it tries to fly away, let it be, because if it can fly steadily and easily, I'm sure it will be fine. But call animal control right away if it can't fly and/or walk!!!! It may even be a baby bird that fell from a nest or something. If so, bring it inside and keep it warm some how while wearing gloves, so you don't get any disease.

    The bird may have hit your window or something, but if it's still alive then it didn't break it's neck, because if it did then that would be fatal.

    Good luck!!!!=D

  2. I'm second to birdgirl.

  3. The bird obviously flew into your glass door and either stunned itself or injured itself.  If it does not recover soon..you might want to put it in a shoebox and put in a quiet dark place to give it time to recuperate without being eaten by a predator.  After about an hour, you can try and release it to see if it can fly away on it's own. It might be able to.  If not, it may be seriously injured and should be taken to a wildlife rehab. Look here for one near you:

    Also, you should try to make your glass door and large windows less reflective..pull curtains, close shades, or put some sort of decorative hangings on your window, or purchase some decals that are made specifically for keeping birds from hitting windows.  See below:

  4. I third Bird Girl.

  5. yea throw it some bread if it doesnt fly away.

  6. This may be a fledgling bird which is a baby just out of the nest. Sometimes they do not know enough to leave or be afraid. They live on the ground for a few days after they leave the nest. The parent birds will come feeed it if this is the case. If not then it may be injured adult or baby. I would go out and put some food down and water see what it does. If you do not look directly at it it will not be as afraid. It may have almost gotten caught or hit a window and have a little trauma and need to just sit and gather itself. Or it could be sick with something. It may be to weak to fly. I would observe it first. If there seems to be something wrong I would call a wildlife rehabber in your area for advice on what to do. If you know it is hurt for sure. Go out with a glove and gently pick it up and bring to a dim room put in a makeshift nest or box and line with tissue for warmth. Put heating pad set on low underneath. Offer food and small shallow dish water. Then get to vet that takes injured wildlife or a rehabber. Both are free for wildlife. It also could be soaking up the sun. Basking. Or imprinted and not scared of humans. So many different things could be going on. Use your best judgement and do what you think is right. Good luck and hats off for caring. :)

  7. I raised a robin that fell out of it's nest. We kept it in a bird cage, and took care of it. For food, we used a blender, and blended up some flax seeds. Then we added water to it, so it was kind of like a soupy paste. Birds eat alot, especially baby ones. If the one at your place isnt a baby, you sould maby blend up some bread, he might have a hard time swallowing. he probably flew into the sliding door. Hopefully he will be ok, but if he has internal bleeding, there is really nothing you can do about it. Poor little guy.

    Good luck.

    P.S. I'm happy to say our little baby robin did survive after all, and eventually flew off into the wild after we taught him to take care of himself.

  8. my thinking is that u give it some bird seed or something and some water and possibly call the animal control so they can help it...i honestly wouldn't pick it up or anything...
