  1. Fill your tank and write down the mileage on your odometer.  The next time you get gas, fill up and write down the mileage.  Subtract the new miles from the old, like this:

    Date    Gallons      Cost         Odomotor   Traveled

    8/8      10.9 gal.     $xx.xx        104.521               (Keep notepad, pen,

    8/1      10.0 gal.     $xx.xx    - 104,376   =  145   & calculator handy.)

                            10)145  =  14.5 mpg

(miles divided by gallons = 14.5 miles per gallon)

I used Mapquest to get the mileage:  estimated 227.5 miles (4 hrs., 11 minutes - figure 5 hours with a rest stop and no extra traffic).

Say your van gets 15 mpg:  15)227.5   =15.17 gallons

    Say, $5/gallon (15.17 x 5 =75.8), that's $76.

Freeway driving, if not stop-&-go, will get better mileage, especially if you stay close to 55 mph and stay off the accelerator.  But always allow extra, so you don't get stuck.

(If you're leaving now, you probably get 15 mpg or a lot better with a mini-van.  However, you should keep track of your gas mileage at least once a month, but try for it all the time.  It's one of the best ways to diagnose a mechanical problem before it gets out of hand.)

  2. From DC to NYC it is 227 mi (one way)

You don't mention how good or how bad on gas is your mini van.  so let's make some assumptions

At 10 mpg (really low / really bad), it will take 22.7 gallons.  And at $4 per gallon, that is about $91

At 15 mpg (low / bad), it will take 15.1 gallons.  And at $4 per gallon, that is about $61

At 20 mpg (average / OK), it will take 11.4 gallons.  And at $4 per gallon, that is close to $45

    =====

Most mini vans should be able to so somewhere between 15 mpg and 20 mpg ($60 to $45).

Also don't forget that NJ Turnpike is toll road (another $10) and another $8 for NYC toll.  So add another $18 (or $30 to be sure.)  There's no NYC toll LEAVING NYC.

So figure about $75 to $90 ONE WAY

    Good luck....

  3. Could you take Amtrak? The train is a great way to go between DC and NYC.
