  1. actually your tailbone isn't really a bone at all, it's cartalige (sorry spelling is wrong?). I fell down on a bat once and it hurt for 2-3 monthes. There wasn't much I could do for it expect sit on padded things and ice it. Icing really helps so I suggest doing that everyday until it's better.

  2. I broke my tailbone when I was 13.  The doctor said basically there wasnt anything that could be done, but that it would hurt for months.  He suggested I take a donut pillow to school to sit on.  Right.  Like a 13 year old girl is gonna be seen in junior high packing around a donut pillow.  I suffered in silence.  It DID last for months.

Now I'm all growed up and I x-ray for a living.  A fractured tailbone (coccyx) is a rather common and painful fracture.  But it is not dangerrous.  I hope you are not in high school so you canb enjoy a pillow the way I couldn't.  If you have to, take something mild for the pain initially, like Advil or Tylenol, or whatever you usually take.  Doctors will not prescribe prescription narcotics for a broken tailbone.   When you do have to sit, it may be easier to sit more on one hip or the other to avoid direct pressure.  And ice.  Foind a nice big bag of peas, put it in a couple of sealed baggies and sit on that puppy.  A bag of french fries works well, but the peas will refreeze better and conform to body shape best.  Good luck, sympathies.....

  3. it could just b bruised. wait a week and see how it feels

  4. Hello Tailbone injury.

I suffered a tailbone injury when someone pushed me down

a flight of stairs. It felt like someone flew me out and dropped me on the bottom of 9 stairs. In the process, my spine was twisted and my tailbone was bent to the left into my left side.  The pain was incredible.  I could only sit in a chair that slanted toward the back.  Otherwise, I had muscle spasms that felt that I was being pinched very hard and unrelenting.  I only got relief when lying flat on my back.

I went to a chiropractor and learned the following technique to do on my own at home:  Lay flat on your back with your head slightly elevated, a pillow would be fine.  Lift your left leg straight up perpendicular to your body.  Bend and flex your foot a few times, keeping your leg straight. Then bend your left knee so that your lower leg (calf)is perpendicular to your upper leg (thigh).

With your right hand, pull your knee (still in the bent position) across your body to the right.  Repeat the exercise,  using your right leg crossing your body to the leftt.  You should hear a small pop either on the left or right.  Do this exericse at least once per day.  Over a period of time, the pain should decrease.

This happened to me in 1994, and now I can sit in a chair with a straight back without pain.  I spent 13 years going to chiropractors to learn this.  It is cheaper to do it at home and you get faster results.

  5. You probably fractured your coccyx (pronounce cox-ix), which is a fancy word for your tailbone.  Sadly, there's not much any doctor can do except tell you to rest and take tylenol or other pain reliever as needed.  I fractured mine twice in 2 years.  It takes a good 6 months or so to heal.

    Good Luck.

  6. I had a similar injury once, it's best to go the doctor right away in case there is something that they can see on an X-ray or something, if you wait, they won't be able to scan it.

And back injuries can cause problems for years, if you start getting things documented right away your general doctor will be a little faster to recommend you to a specialist like a physical therapist.

  7. Well the same thing happened to me. I tripped on a wet set of bleachers and chipped my tailbone.  Its been a little less then a year and I still can't sit properly sometimes.  I no this may sound weird, but you shouls ice it, sit on a heating pad, and sit on padded stuff. The dotor said to try to sit up straight because that will help it to heal. I hope this helps!!

  8. Some good answers. A fractured coccyx will heal with time. Tylenol or an NSAID will help with pain.

BUT, a pillow or a donut cushion is not the best device. They make a coccyx cushion that has a VEE cut out of the back end. This allows you to put weight on your tush - OK, your ischial tuberosities - without putting pressure on your tailbone.

A good pharmacy or medical supply store will have a coccyx cushion.
