Question:

PLEASE HELP. Tunnel Vision - Temporary Blindness?

I'm a bit scared. This has been going on since the beginning of summer, so since June, but it's gotten worse. I think it's tunnel vision but I'm not sure. Something keeps happening to me randomly. Its like everything goes very blurry and then black and after a few seconds my vision is back to normal but I'm really dizzy and kinda feel like I want to throw up. A few times I thought I was going to pass out. What is this? Is it serious? Should I tell my parents? I'm really freaked out!

  1. stay away from computer screens for a start tell your parents and get some medical advice a.s.a.p

  2. you should definitely tell your parents. and go see your doctor, as to cure it or prevent it from getting serious.

  3. The same thing happens to me, i was diagnosed with Ortho-static-hypo-tension, just be sure to drink lots of water, and eat lots of salt. check out a doctor just in case though

  4. xc has the same problem as you. This is or sounds like a Vagal reflex.

There are basically two types of nervous systems, the volunatry (quick, direct, fast, intense...) and the involuntary or autonomic.

The autonomic controls things that nature was smart enough to keep away from our 'brilliance' (think war in Iraq) by taking it out of our voluntary control. You breath automatically. Heart rate and respiratory rate etc. are automatic. When you get startled, your heart rate goes up, your blood pressure goes up, you breathe faster, eyes or pupils dilate, hair goes up on your neck... that stuff. So that part, the sympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous system speeds things up. Now you can fight, or flee.

When you eat, the Vagus nerve kicks in and makes your guts work to start digestion. But this nerve, a parasympathetic side of the autonomic nervous system, slows down the heart, lowers blood pressure...so you sort of relax after eating for awhile.

When you have one of these episodes, you are having an overaction of the Vagus nerve which lowers your blood pressure rapidly. If you don't lay down, and it keeps on going, you'll faint. People have died when unable to get flat. Need your head below your heart or at the same level. Then it'll go away in a few minutes, you get back up, apologize to the other people in the elevator and off you go.

You already know the symptoms. If you have any further question, let me know.

  5. Yes, you should tell your parents immediately and go get a through eye exam ASAP.
