Question:

PLEASE HELP - What Is This, Temporary Blindness?

I'm a bit scared. This has been going on since the beginning of summer, so since June, but it's gotten worse. I think it's tunnel vision but I'm not sure. Something keeps happening to me randomly. Its like everything goes very blurry and then black and after a few seconds my vision is back to normal but I'm really dizzy and kinda feel like I want to throw up. A few times I thought I was going to pass out. What is this? Is it serious? Should I tell my parents? I'm really freaked out!

(I know I should have posted this in Optical, but I did tha before, I wasn't getting many answers.)

  1. GET THIS CHECKED OUT ASAP! AND BY CHECKED OUT, I MEAN GO TO THE DOCTOR!

  2. I can see this is making you feel apprehensive.

Especially if you're in your teens, or have just started a very active exercise routine- then most likely this will be a form of low blood pressure named "postural hypotension." Especially if you get up too quickly, or change position too quickly, before your BP can adjust- these symptoms can occur.

Postural hypotension happens in teens because the body is changing to its adult form, and the cardiovascular system sometimes lags behind, and the blood vessels are tuned still to a child's demands.

Another possibility. The vagus nerve sends impulses between your brain and body, and usually sends the right signals so that your head is receiving enough blood supply. When the vagus nerve is unable to do this, then the same symptoms of passing out or nearly doing so can occur.

If your doctor suspects vagus nerve impairment, he will refer you to a neurologist, a specialist in the field who can diagnose and treat the condition.

Postural Hypotension and Vagus nerve disorders are easily remedied. Please see your doctor, and I hope this syncope (feeling of passing out) will be under control in no time flat.

  3. You should tell someone. There could be a serious reason for this and it might be nothing. It could be a migraine, stress or a tumor. The bad thing is that the test for this is a CAT scan. CAT scan has a lot of X-ray radiation. If you go for testing, tell them that you want an MRI instead. What ever you do, to do nothing is not a good choice.

  4. It sounds like pre-syncopal (near fainting) episodes which can be from many reasons. Definitely tell your parents, they will freak out if you pass out in front of them:) I agree that you should get checked out. You could be dehydrated or have low blood sugar. Get your blood pressure checked, and your sugar and make sure everything is ok, meanwhile drink plenty of water.

  5. Tell your parents .....make an appointment..

and change your life style things like this can be caused by unhealthiness or not enough sleep....

    but go to the doctors...
