  1. Spielberg's intention was to provide a disorientating, frighteningly realistic view of war, specifically the taking of Omaha Beach.  If you're asking what sort of effects it had on the audience, I would list shock, horror, fear, and sadness as well as a more profound understanding of the dangers of battle, far removed from the typical heroic Hollywood WWII movie that showed war as adventure and triumph by "the good guys" over anonymous villains.

I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for, but I might check back and see if you post more details.

Btw, fun fact: one of the many people who appreciated this sequence was Scotty from "Star Trek", who was a WWII veteran and lost a finger in battle.

  2. I'm not going to do your Media homework for you, but I'll give you my opinion.

The first half an hour of Saving Private Ryan fills me with a lot of different emotions. Hurt, anger, sadness, and patriotism. It gives us who weren't there an insight into not just the physical pain that they went through on the front line, but the emotional turmoil of watching their new-found brothers die before them.

    HTH.
