PLEASE HELP! vista wont let me burn my movies?

Okay all of my movies are in avi form.. I was told they needed to be converted to MPEG-2 format.. so i downloaded "x video converter" and converted them.. yet they still dont burn to a dvd disc.. im using vista and the dvd burning software is roxio and windows movie maker.. when i try to add they converted movie to windows movie maker it says its corrupt and not valid.. when i try to add it to roxio it says "cannot be edited".. do i need to download some other converter.. is it my burnng software..? please help!!!
