  1. 3.78 is the total price...say the comb is x and the brush is x+2....that means 2x+2=3.78...

    so 3.78 minus 2 is 1.78 and so the equation becomes 2x=1.78

    Divide 1.78 by 2 which is .89

    Therefore the comb (x) is 89 cents

    The brush(x+2) is $2.89

  2. is sales tax included???

  3. brush = $2.89

    comb = $.89

  4. if you need the work:

    1. create equations

    x - brush

    y - comb

    y+2=x     comb plus two bucks is the cost of brush

    x + y = 3.78    comb plus brush = 3.78

    2. make second equation equal x

    x + y = 3.78

    goes to:

    x = 3.78 - y

    3. put equations together because they each equal x:

    3.78 - y = y+2

    4. solve for y

    5. input y value into x+y=3.78, then solve for x

  5. Let b be the cost of the brush and c be the cost of the comb. You can make two equations:

    b = c + 2

    b + c = 3.78

    Because you know b = c + 2, then substitute c + 2 for b in the second equation:

    b + c = 3.78

    c + 2 + c = 3.78

    2c + 2 = 3.78

    2c = 1.78

    c = 0.89

    b = c + 2

    b = 0.89 + 2

    b = 2.89

    ANSWER: The cost of the brush is $2.89 and the cost of the comb is $0.89.
