i'll be taking the world history sat II subject test soon, and i've been using the kaplan book. i took the practice test 1 and did horribly (440). i noticed that in the kaplan book there were several typos, and also looking here on Y!A the general consensus seems to be that kaplan sucks. im not blaming my bad score entirely on the book (i need to study in a more efficient way), but im wondering if this is a bad choice for a study book. what would u recommend? also, the kaplan book said that they had strategies for the map questions, but all they had was a practice question with the answer. im starting not to trust this book lol

what should i do?

  1. follow your book, i'm sure your teachers and syllabus is right

  2. In my opinion, from best to worst:

    Princeton Review

    Collegeboard

    Barron's

    Kaplan

    McGraw Hill

Princeton Review usually does a pretty good job of prepping you for the test, although the "lessons" may sometimes come off as a little vague--you'll know when that happens, cuz the end of chapter "drills" are WTFHOLYSHIT hard and you've never even heard of half the terms used in the question (but that doesn't happen too often). Collegeboard is official, end of discussion, although the tests they include are often more outdated that those included by other companies. Barron's makes things a bit harder than necessary, but I generally favor this company as well.

Kaplan looks like it was put together by an absent-minded college professor going after a little cash. McGraw hill probably was really put together by an illiterate babboon scribbling with one hand tied behind its back. Their biology book had about half their respiration/photosynthesis equations written with the WRONG coefficients, for example.

However, if you're short on time, I would suggest doing the Princeton Review, then supplementing it with McGraw Hill (which, despite misprinting 1/10 of the book, does an excellent job of summing up topics succintly in an understandable fashion. You just have to be very sure of yourself when taking their tests and be able to point out the misprints in their answer key). Afterwards, do whatever you have to and take as many practice tests as possible.

Stay away from Kaplan (cuz they suck) and Barron's (cuz you're too short on time, if you're planning on taking the June SATs).
