  1. 4 x 12 = 48 inches in the 4 foot long board. 48 inches divided by 8 = 6, so 1/8th of the board is 6 inches. The shelf will be 6 in and he will have 42 inches of the board left.

  2. So, first you have to read the word problem very carefully and slowly. So it says here that the board is 4 feet long. The hose wants to build a shelf with 1/8 of the board for the shelf. The word "of" in these means you have to multiply 1/8 with the total length of the board which is 4 feet long. So, 1/8 times 4= 1/2 feet long. Therefore, our final answer is 1/2 feet long, because they are asking how "long" will the shelf be when he gets 1/8 from the board.

  3. 4 ft x 1/8 = 4/8 reduced= 1/2 ft  so you need 1/2 ft for the shelf

  4. 4 divided by 8 = the answer.

    0.5 feet.

  5. 6 inchs

      48 in. in 4 ft. divide by 8 = 6
