So, I am getting hermit crabs very soon, and I am going to keep them in a plastic storage bin thing. Iam concerend about one thing though...

How will I keep them warm and humid enough, if I can't get an undertank heater, and it is plastic???

I have a lamp.

It is 60 watts. It gets BURNING hot, really really fast though.

It might catch on fire,or burn the crabs. Could I get a lower watt bulb. How many watts???

What should I do???

  1. Get a normal light bulb to put in there (We do this with baby chicks when the high powered is too hot) or just slowly decrease wattage. Also, make sure to mist the take with water that is NOT chlorinated, you can either buy some or get the dechlorinating drops.

  2. No matter what habitat the hermit crabs are in, you shouldn't use a bulb that gives off heat and light. Since hermit crabs are nocturnal, it will dry them out and suffocate them. The under tank heater should be okay if it's thick plastic. It doesn't get that hot. Maybe you can use a heat rock only if worst comes to worst. You will need to mist the habitat with de-chlorinated water 2 times a day. You will also need a natural sea sponge in there to keep the humidity up. Also cover the top with plastic wrap to keep in humidity and heat. Now that it's summer, the hermit crabs should be fine with no heat source, but as it starts to cool down, get that heat pad. Remember don't use a heat lamp, it will kill the hermit crabs. Good luck and you can email me if you have any other questions. Just put "hermit crab question" in the subject line so I know who it's from.
