in the 90's the oz government banned tobacco advertising from sporting events..... they said it encouraged people to smoke and that smoking is bad for your health!

so why does our government allow alcohol sponsorship and advertising at motor sport events? surely this must encourage people to drink and drive!

some examples of this are: the Fosters F1 grand prix....

in the V8 super car series you have teams sponsered by jim beam... jack daniels.... thats not to mention all of the billboards around the event that say VB and TOOHEYS. i relise that these companies pay loads of money to advertise there product, but surely there are other non alcoholic sponsers out there willing and wanting to advertise there product!

your thourghts please

  1. i thiknk your right, it is

at moto X though they are majorly sponsered by energy drinks

i dont know why they cant do that at other racing events

  2. The sponsorship is not illegal, but drink driving is.  I have yet to see an alcohol company say "Drink lots of our product and drive home".  They don't.  Why?  Because they aren't stupid.

I see loads of billboards and advertising each day.  I've lost count of how many Jim Beam ads I saw this week.  Has this encouraged me to purchase Jim Beam?  No.  I don't like Bourbon.  I see an ad for feminine lingerie and do I want to start cross dressing?  No.  I, as the consumer have the choice and advertisers know that.

With regards to Motor Sport, I see loads of telecommunication companies, finance companies, insurance companies, electronic companies all advertising their products.  Like alcohol companies, it's not illegal.

The alcohol companies do not encourage drink driving.  Human stupidity does.

  3. i think so, because just like smoking its encouraging you to do something bad for your body, especially at races that ridiculous. im not from Australia but I am visiting it in 7 years.

  4. Good question.

The advertising ban on tobacco products came from people like you grouping together with health groups and lobbying the government for change.

There's no reason you couldn't do the same and urge the government to consider banning alcohol advertising at sports events. Given that motorsports is heavily attended by young men, who are also the greatest victims of drink driving, I think  you stand a chance at success.

  5. Yes it's wrong irresponsible and almost immoral. The alcohol industries have the most money for advertising and as you said pay loads...it's all about the almighty dollar.
