  1. It's not good. The fertilisers we use are rich in nitrogen (aka. ammonia) and a lot of this ends up in freshwater bodies. The extra nutrients fuel algal growth and the blooms can choke the whole freshwater ecosystem. Plants die because of lack of light, fish die because of lack of oxygen and the whole water body can be made toxic. Ammonia is also a metabolic waste product for fish, in small systems this can build up to levels where they are poisoned by the nitrogen.
