  1. female - age 53 -  white- protestant - mortgage advisor - married - 2 kids

    somewhat

I am in favor - in balance with expense

I am in favor of energy efficient appliances - not sure about solar panels.  I am not familiar enough with their costs and efficiencies.

Citizens responsibility - but supported by government making it easier for consumers to act responsibly and good for the government to provide information to help.  Also good for the government to monitor businesses to make sure they are being responsible.

  2. female, 53, cauc, Presbyterian, RN, married, 3

Envir. issues are very important to me.

There should be a gradual phase in of this.  I don't think we have enough  resources to make it 100% mandatory all at once.

I believe energy efficient appliances should be required.  I'm not sure about solar panels...I'd need more info about long-term maintenance, etc.

It is every individual's responsibility to conserve the environment; however gov't may need to get involved at times, e.g. litter laws, minimum requirements laws, etc.; but it basically comes down to the individual.

    somewhat

Are you in favor of requiring homes being constructed using green/recycled material? Please explain.

Sure, if there are recycled materials able to be used, great! yet I would not "mandate" it, or make it part of a building code.

How do you feel about requiring solar panels & energy efficient appliances be included in a home? Please explain.

Require: No. Encourage: Yes. We are still Americans, and choice is key. Also, cost by manufacturers will skyrocket, and the average person will most likely not be able to afford the new items.

Do you think it is mostly the government's or the citizens' responsibility to conserve our environment? Please explain.

    Both.

Yes, the government can regulate businesses, but it is the average citizen who can and should make the "green" choice.

    Hope this helps.

  4. British , no religion, married, 6 children

Very important I want the world to be around for my children's children.

Everything that can be made of recycle things should, the world is running out of things

Solar panels are a good idea and so are wind turbines all news houses should have there own source of electric, water should also be recycled for eg flushing the loo.

Both, the government should make it cheaper for people to go green, eg vat exemption on things like solar panels, more grants fore installing them.

The government must make sure bigger and poorer families can still aford to live e.g increasing car tax is not the answer.

  5. 1. Female,36,white,christian,stay@home mom,separated,2 kids.

2.somewhat and very, depending on the subject

3.I think using green/recycled building materials should be cheaper, they're usually more expensive to use, and hard to find.

4.I think people/residential, and business should definitely start using more solar energy, especially in areas of this country that have long periods of sun, my oldest son and I have been talking alot about that lately, but to require it, unless the price of solar panels goes down along with the storage/battery equipment, it would be to much of a burden on the working class poor.

    5. I think it is everyones responsibility to conserve and use our resourses as wisely as possible. Your can't have the government dictate, then you have people that will try to revolt. It has to be a desire that goes deeper than the government, also recycling is something that has to become a habit that is formed, and most people don't have good habits or knowledge of what they can actually do to make a difference, or how easy it is to do just little simple things that make a huge impact.

  6. Environmental issues are very important to me and should be important to everyone.

I feel that the government should give a substantial rebate to those who are building homes using green material or alternative energy sources.  I think that these materials should be required in the construction of all new homes.

VERY important to use energy efficent appliances, as I said above, all new homes should be constructed with alternate energy resources. (solar, wind, etc)

We as a people are responsible for conserving our environment, unfortunatly, many of do not do this.  It is the governments gob to enforce it.  It's simple really, there should be a bylaw for recycling, using reusable bags, CFL bulbs,)  And there should be a form of rebate for those who are using alternative energy sources.

  7. Female. 30. White. Baptist. Separated. 1 child.

Very important. Not necessarily REQUIRED, but in favor of using. Solar panels...not really. Both are responsible.

  8. Female, 57, Caucasian, Catholic, retired psychologist, married, 4 children, all grown, two grand children.

Yes, I am in favor of making 'green homes' the only homes that can be constructed. Green homes are just one little bit in trying to save this planet, but if we made ONLY 'green homes' or had to make older homes 'green' when they were sold, that much LESS carbon would be released into the atmosphere, and even just planting a few trees is 'green' ...

I am in favor or REQUIRING solar panels and energy efficient appliances in EVERY home ... we live in a small apartment, up three flights of stairs (NO elevator) and we have all 'energy efficient' appliances ... but we also have a 'slanted roof' and if we had solar panels up there, it would make life in this apartment even better ... just KNOWING they were up there would be enough for me.

It's the CITIZENS' responsibility to conserve our environment, but it is the citizen who votes to elect the government, so they can 'conserve' both actively and passively, by voting for 'ecologically sound' representatives.

yes, absolutely! It doesn't make sense to me when we demo houses (obviously ones without mold and major damage and etc....) and don't use anything to build new ones. I know Habitat for Humanity has some "stores" where people can donate their old toilets, cabinets, furnaces, everything and you can go a purchase these. I think it's wonderful. I don't think we should just throw away non-green items - like cabinets made of a non-sustainable wood - we should keep re-using them!!

I would love if solar panels came with my home!! I just wish they weren't so expensive. I think we shouldn't even sell the appliances that aren't energy-efficient.

That's a tough one. I think it's everyones responsibility. We, in the U.S., are free to do what ever we want. We would complain if the government ran our lives but on the other side when the government doesn't help us in the way we want we get pissy. So it's a catch 22. We need a healthy balance.

    not at all

yes because if we recycle more we have a better chance of living on the planet longer

i think solar panels are cool because you can save energy and use it when needed

i think its everyone responsibility to conserve the environment because we live in it so we need to protect it as well

    hope this helps

i am a new comer to this thing its pretty cool

How important are environmental issues to you? not at all, somewhat, or very? Somewhat,It is hard to be really enivironmentally friendly when other people are not. You wonder whether you are making a difference.

Are you in favor of requiring homes being constructed using green/recycled material? Please explain.

Yes.I think that many homes will be needed to be built in the future for an increasing population and if green/recycled materials are not used then it will be a huge waste of other materials that could have been used elsewhere.

How do you feel about requiring solar panels & energy efficient appliances be included in a home? Please explain.

I think that it is important for everyone to do their bit to help the environment and if solar panels and energy efficient appliances were commonplace then it would be one step closer to a more energy efficient world. We are all going to use our homes so it would be great to be better for the planet whilst you are in your home.

Do you think it is mostly the government's or the citizens' responsibility to conserve our environment? Please explain.

Both.Although I would more swing towards the government because they have vast amounts of money to show people what is happening to the planet, try to change peoples habits, educate people, grant permission to build on brownfield land rather than wildlife habitats and generally try to give incentives to be more environmentally friendly.

I am in favor of having the option, but not be mandatory because I feel like we already have to many things in-forced by law that should be our decisions to make, and some people just wouldn't be able to afford it.

The same it would be great if that could happen, but I don't think it should be mandatory.

I can't say I think it's mostly either ones responsibility, I think we all need to change our lifestyles for the sake of our children and their children and the future that may be at stake.  I think every little change is a big help and that the government should help us come up with ideas and promote it, but each one of us needs to take a step to make a change now.

  13. 27, white, christian, beverage manager, single

    Very!

I think I would be, but i'm not looking to buy a home right now, but when i do, it will be on the top of my list

I already have started to look into them for the future...saves a lot of energy!

I think its both, i mean if the gov't does nothing then what will the citizens do...but at the same time, there are already so many things not around that our grandparents had that we dont...i dont want the same for the future generations, so i conserve as much as possible

  14. Female, 48, Caucasian, (decline to state), School Bus Driver, Married, 2 Teenage Sons + 24yr. old Stepson

    Somewhat.

No.  If a house happened to catch fire, I'd rather see it burn, not melt.  Melting is more toxic.

Not everyone can afford  these requirements.  I think it would be impossible to mandate.

It's the citizen's responsibility however, people are either ignorant or don't want to change.

Where we live there is free pickup of recyclables if you use a blue bag.  It's really cut down on the amount of trash our household has taken to the landfill.  It saves us "dump fees" and it's good for the environment.

***Hey kiddo!  You probably had lots of time to do this and put it off, but glad to help you anyway!***

  15. female / 53 / British / Atheist / Teacher / Divorced / 2 children

    very important

all building materials should be made from recycled or otherwise green materials which would then result in new builds, business builds and DIY using those materials or ones they had acquired themselves which would essentially be recycled (2nd user or pre-owned)

solar panels / wind turbines  and energy efficient appliances should be mandatory in new builds - domestic or business pemises. If these EE apps were only ones available their cost would come down and the world would benefit. Even better though, individuals should learn to do with less. Ask any older person about energy consumption in their youth - we conserved it, mainly because we couldn't afford it and because the National Grid couldn't cope with high usage (here in UK) Perhaps the threatened recession is a good thing in that consumers will be much more careful about throwing their money around = recycling / making do / less energy overuse

It is the citizen's responsibility, because they ultimately create the government. If concensus opinion demands green policies then the government must provide them or go under, in the long term - such is democracy. Politicians who hold out against the public tide are swept aside (and look idiotic in the process) The public need to create the pressure though.

  16. female, 48, Caucasian, Christian, Home schooling mother, married, 4 children

    very important

no. Generally when the government mandates how private individuals do something, they make a mess of the process, it becomes much more expensive, and either does not solve the problem, or creates new ones.

No, these things should all be market-driven.

It is the citizen's responsiblilty. The government should only do things that encourage conservation, not mandate it. Most environmental protection done by the government now is not really effective, and is based on junk science. (such as requiring us to use mercury-filled lightbulbs to cut down on greenhouse gases, which have never been factaully shown to have a causal effect on warming the earth.

  17. I'd love to help!

Female/26/Raised Catholic but now not sure/Stay at home mom/Married/ 1 child

    They are VERY important

100% in favor- There are soo many useable materials being wasted. If we recycle these materials it would make a gigantic difference

I'm for it, I just don't see it as being a feasable idea at this time.  If we can make it happen for sure, then by all means, go for it

The government- I'd rather not get into the reasons, I can go on for days. But to make it simple I'll say that they should be more concerned about conservation than consumption. Money, money, money...that's their ONLY concern. Well, maybe not just money...I forgot power.

    Good luck on your project

  18. Male,68, mixed,uncertain, Retired farmer, married,2

    Very important

Certainly not all recycled material, although that might bring construction to a grinding halt.

We have no definition as to what are green materials, so question is premature.

We are a at a juncture point, when new concepts in solar energy propose to lower total costs of solar power below nuclear. It would not be a great idea to force all new homes to have solar for that reason, and the urgent reason. There are not even close to enough solar panels being made to accomplish this.

Now, we might insist on energy efficient appliances, or no appliances. We should not insist that people install an energy efficient cook stove or clothes dryer, nor yet air conditioner.. even though those can be our largest uses of power... Why?  One may not want a clothes dryer, and prefer a line. One may not need a cook stove. One may not need air conditioning.

Should we require an energy efficient central heating system in a house that is heated by the sun? Or an energy efficient domestic water heater when the water heater is a solar heater?

Individuals and government can both conserve environment, our resources. Individuals should not wait for government to take action, and governments should not wait for the whole population to get on side.

If I had waited for  government 30 years ago, I would still be waiting to build my own solar heated home. We hope that governments might lead, but mostly governments just get in line with what most people think should be done, and do it a long time later. That suggests being involved in the political process to keep prodding,  prodding both government and electorate.

environment issues are very important to me.  i try and recycle as much as i can and i am always trying to find new ways for me to help the environment

yes. this would be another step closer to saving our planet

yes. my parents are actually looking into getting solar panels for our home. when a new house or estate is being build i think it would be a good idea to put solar panels in place from now on.

both need get a move on!!  every step counts.  i think the government need to help citizens by making solar panels etc more available to us

  20. Male: 40: Lutheran: Clergy: Married: 5 kids

Environmental issues are somewhat important.  I don't place them at the top.

I am not in favor of requirements for construction.  Gov't mandates are not a good thing.  Individuals should be free tp choose.

Solar panels are constructed using some VERY nasty chemicals.  As the demand for them increases, so does the use of these chems.  Energy efficient appliances will be sought by the consumer.  If they are truly efficient, the market will determine what gets sold.  Again, no requirements from gov't but rather leave the individual to make the choice.

It is the citizens' responsibility.  We are the gov't, to be honest.  We elect the officials, we pay the taxes.

If we don't protect the environment and leave it up to our children, what kind of mess will they have when they are our age.

Homes need to be constructed using recycled materials.  We have all this waste that could be re formulated and put to good use.  There are too many dump sites in this world.

Why would people not want energy efficient appliances.  It not only saves the environment but also saves money.

I think it is everyones job to contribute to saving our world and keeping it clean.  We all live here and we all need to do our part.

How important are environmental issues to you? not at all, somewhat, or very?

    Somewhat, but with growing interests.

Are you in favor of requiring homes being constructed using green/recycled material? Please explain.

I would say yes, but in reality, it would all depend on the added costs of having to use recycled materials. You are not going to get anyone to use the technologies avaialble is there is a cheaper way of doing things. Even going green today is a business. Where we live it gets up to 115 degrees daily. This would be perfect for solar panels and such and would really cut the electrical consumption and water heating down considerably. The problem is that the technology right now costs too much. Its really made for people that are well off and use  "going green" as a trend.

How do you feel about requiring solar panels & energy efficient appliances be included in a home? Please explain.

Again, all in favor of it, but the technology has to be cheaper. I'm sure it will head in that direction, but its not there now.  Same thing happend with the electrical car. Would have done a world of good, but were to expensive and would have removed the dependancy of oil away from this country... can't have that.

Do you think it is mostly the government's or the citizens' responsibility to conserve our environment? Please explain. Seeing as government is supposed to be about the citizens (or at least should be in a perfect world) it is the responsibility of both to be able to do it. Citizens have the responsibility to push their representatives to act in the environment.

Are you in favor of requiring homes being constructed using green/recycled material? Please explain.  Yes they should be sustainably harvested, long-lasting woods, little or no plastics.  Recycled material is good

How do you feel about requiring solar panels & energy efficient appliances be included in a home? Please explain.

May be too early to start requiring this, maybe in the distant future. Maybe tax incentives to increase solar use.  Help with start-up costs of Solar stuff.  Energy efficient appliances: most sold today are... if not they should be.

Do you think it is mostly the government's or the citizens' responsibility to conserve our environment? Please explain.  Citizens responsibility. The government is too busy in education, public works, and national security issues right now.  It is up to all people to do what they can

  24. female, 26, white, spiruital, fulltime student looking for work, married and 4 children.

    enviromental issues are somewhat important.

I would love to have and see homes going green. its important to us now and for our children. it wouls make me feel better to be green. in the long run its cheaper and we will not be so dependent on other countries for products, not to mention all the outsourcing we are doing. because of the outsourcing, places like china have increased emissions and they are using more energy than the united states now.

required solar pannels and energy efficient appliances should be standard. housses should be built with solar pannels. for older houses, if it would be affordable and if the home owner has the money they should do it. appliances are almost energy star standard, however there are still some "floaters" out there that are not. should be required.

it is both. the people are trying to do what they can for the most part. if course there are the exceptions...the people who think luxary is an energy wasting home and gas guzzling suvs. but the gov't is in complete denial. i think as a whole all of us are citizens of the world, we all should be pro active and conserve, recycle and reduce energy.

thank you for this survey it was stimulating and entertaining. good luck tomorrow in school!

How important are environmental issues to you? not at all, somewhat, or very? very

Are you in favor of requiring homes being constructed using green/recycled material? Please explain. yes I am. I think it's very important to conserve our resources. The less we take from our environment the more we will save for our furture generation. Going green in construction will conserve tree's and cost. Thus making a brighter future for our children.

How do you feel about requiring solar panels & energy efficient appliances be included in a home? I think if at all possible..requiring solar panels and energy efficient appliances should  be required. Anything that could conserve energy and money is the most senseable way to go.

Do you think it is mostly the government's or the citizens' responsibility to conserve our environment? Please explain. I think it should be both the governments and our citizens' responsiblity to conserve our environment. Our governement should pass laws such as making it a requirement to go green whenever possible and our citizens to follow up. One element will not work without the other. So as long as the government and the citizens work together the next generation will have plenty of resources left.

  26. Female;35;White; Unsure;Stay at home Mom/Wife; Married; 2

    Somewhat to Very important

No. I think our government is too involved in too much of our lives to begin with.

I would LOVE to have these in my home! I have been trying to buy the energy efficient appliances for years...some are out of my control. I can't decide the appliances for the homes that we don't own. But we do what we can where we can.

It is the CITIZEN's responsibility to conserve our environment.

When we allow the government to have too much control, then we give up our freedom to choose what we feel is better for ourselves and our families. We cannot allow them to deny the majority something because a minority is doing the wrong thing. This is a bad habit that we the people have gotten into and it has created more problems than solutions.

Env Issues are paramount, I have a Native American heritage, and hate the destruction or waste of any thing or being.

I am in favor of using green/recycled materials, I use them at and in my own home, and if you look at my home,I have NO plastic I use only natural materials.

I don't know about forcing people to have energy efficient items in their homes, but I believe through education, people will get on board to help. Except those greedy fossil fuel b******s who only think of themselves...

I think it should be a cooperative effort to educate the public on HOW to conserve, how to help. But the lobbyists in our country only care about ONE green, money, and sadly, it is the bane of any conservation effort put forth by those of us who actually care. We could all start by using reusable goods instead of disposables, what a difference this small sacrifice would make!  I learned from my grandmother, we need to teach the next generations..........We ARE our brother's keepers.

  28. Very.

Don't see there is an argument for going any other way. We have to stop using new stuff and recycle much more. As a species we can't just continue to consume at the rate we do.

Solar panels and energy efficient devices should be included in every new build and built into the price. The householder wants their bills to be as small as possible so why would you not want them. To require them to be put into existing house is another matter. Yes, but who is going to pay?

It is everybodies responsibility. Every individual has to do their bit but the government has to lead by example. If people show its important to them the government will follow because they want our votes BUT most people are too apathetic and don't care enough to bother

  31. female, 18, Canadian ( but ive lived in australia for years...) and im single.

The environment is so important to me... sometimes i turn off the lights in my house and put a 6watt lamp on instead to save greenhouse emitions.

I am definitely in favor of homes requring being made of recycled material and think it would greatly reduce trash. Green materials would be great too.

it should become mandatory for each house to have a solar panel to take the strain off main power. energy efficient devices should definitely be included in a home, both for the environment and for the cost of bills to the home owner.

i think citizens do not take enough responciblity. but governments have a duty to set the standards.
