Here is the problem: Alice and Samantha watered 5/6 of the yard together. Samantha watered 1/3 of that amount What part of the yard did Samantha water?

  1. if they both did 5/6 of the yard together, and Samantha only did 1/3 then you need to divide 5/6 into three parts.  If you did (5/6 divided by 3) then each part is 5/18 of the yard. So Samantha did 5/18.  ALice would have done 10/18.  


  2. Samantha watered 1/3 which = 2/6

    If both of the girls watered 5/6 of the garden then Alice watered the other 3/6

    (5/6 - 2/6 = 3/6)

    which is equal to 1/2 of the garden

    since 3/6 = 1/2

    To compare or deal with fractions you need to get them to have the same denominators they are called common denominators.

    Then you can add them or subtract them or see which one is bigger and which smaller.

  3. 2/3 x 5/6 = 5/9

    If you want further explanation, just say.

  4. 1/3 of 5/6 is the same as 1/3 times 5/6 so that's what we work out.

    1/3 X 5/6 = (1 X 5) / (3 X 6) = 5/18 and that's the answer
