  1. I don't think microbes directly affect climate.  They play important roles in processes like the generation of oxygen, and the carbon cycle.

    Ocean microbes can cause diseases - like the red tide - that can affect human health.  For the earth, they play roles in the carbon and sulfur cycles.  Probably also the nitrogen cycle.  In the ocean, they are important for photosynthesis, yielding oxygen, and they are the base of the food chain.
