This year i was on the freshan volleyball team, I was a setter, captain of the team, & our season was undefeated. During the off-season which is Dec. to May, there was a club volleyball team that the head coach recomend all of the team join so that we stay in shape & keep our skills in use. The team was very expensive $2,000+ & my parents couldn't afford it. Of course all of the girls who played club & try out for JV next year will make the team (shew-ins), I didnt play so its been a while since i have talked to the head coach, im not sure he even remembers who i am. So i went to his room the other day & talked to him about a summer camp he is running, the next day i came back with the form and money for the camp & meant to ask about positions, ect., but i didnt! the timing didnt seem right & i got scared =( so i want to get more face time with him without bugging him to death. my fear: JV coaches have turned away ppl who have tried out, & were on the freshman team! this could be me =[

  1. As far as I'm concern as long as your not obnoxious then the coach should appreciate the fact that even though you didn't have the opportunity to play club, your still willing to go to his camp and that your interested in the sport.  Also, you don't always need to been on a name basis. Sometime the JV coach couldn't even remeber my name and the freshmen practiced right before them and she would always watch. If he sees your potential then let him make the effort to get to know you.

    Good Luck with next season!

  2. You don't need to make up a reason to go back and talk to him.  Just be honest and tell him you want to join the summer camp to get yourself ready for next season.  You should also open up and tell him how you feel and how badly you want to make the team.  And during the summer camp, prove to him your willingness by working harder than everybody.  Nothing works better than honest hard work in a long run and most coaches love honest players who work hard.    Good Luck.

  3. I totally understand needing a reason to talk to him again and not wanting to bug someone.  I am the same way.

If it were me, I would ask him if he had a minute.  Then, I would probably tell him that I was wondering what brand of volleyball he would suggest for home practices .  If you already have a ball, ask him if there is a specific brand that would be better for a setter.  After the conversation starts, then I would transition to your questions about positions, etc.  I would make sure to thank him for his time.

Like Can I Play said, you have to be open and honest.  While you might not be intending to buy a ball at this moment, it is a good ice breaker.  A setter should (must) have a ball at home to practice with.

Our varsity setter does NOT play club and I have seen club players not make the team.  Give it your all during the camp and tryouts and keep a positive attitude.  Don't be afraid to speak up.  A setter should be the loudest player on the court.

Odds are that your coach is a teacher who is coaching because he loves volleyball.  He might welcome the chance to talk about a favorite subject.
