  1. Ser (to be) is a permanent state of being. Like, I am funny, yo soy comica or I am a student, soy estudiante.

Estar (to be) is used to indicate location (I am at the park, estoy en el parque), or a temporary state of being such as, I am sad, estoy triste.

I am coming would be, "yo vengo"

Its a little difficult to learn this at first, but you will get the hang of it. Ask your teacher for clarification, or you can even search it on the internet.

EDIT: It can't be 'yo soy vengo' because soy comes from ser (the permanent state), therefore it makes no sense.

  2. People like you shouldn't attempt learning a language from a textbook, just live in Spain for a few years and then you'll be good

  3. I am coming = yo vengo.

You use ser when it's something you are, like i am a doctor, i am intelligent, i am a great guy. You use estar to refer to a state, like i am tired, i am at home, I am married...

  4. "Ser" means "to be" in a permanent sense. Yo soy una mujer.

"Estar" means "to be" as of the moment of the sentence.  Yo estoy feliz.

  5. Basically, SER is used for permanent, inherent things, such as where you are FROM and what you are LIKE.

"Ella es muy simpatica." "She is very nice."

"Soy de Kentucky." "I am from Kentucky." (SER)

ESTAR is kind of like TEMPORARY things.  Where you ARE at the moment, what you're LIKE at the moment and what you're DOING at the moment.

"Estoy comiendo."  This is present progressive for "I am eating."

"Donde esta?"  "Where is he/she/it?"  (ESTAR)

Basically, try to remember PERMANENT (SER) and TEMPORARY (ESTAR).  That's how I memorized it and I've gotten all A's in my college Spanish classes.
