  1. What is rabies?

  2. 1) Yes

    2) Hydrophobia (Rabies) is a viral disease most commonly found in wild animals worlwide. It is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal which goes on to die from the infection. The virus affects the behaviour of the carrier, making them increasingly aggressive, this encourages the biting that is required for transmission.

The incubation period is generally 20 to 90 daysalthough in some cases it may lie dormant for up to a few years.

The virus enters the nervous system and travels to the brain, then the symptoms break out.

It is basically a form of encephalitis, the best known symptom being the hydrophobia or terror of water, this despite suffering raging thirst. Spasms become increasingly severe until they end in the death of the infected animal.

There is a vaccination that can be given, but it is rare for a person to recover, especially since most cases occur in the third world where access to modern medicine and treatments is extremely limited.

3+4)Control of the disease is achieved through prevention In the UK quarantine regulations ensure that animals entering the country are disease free. People deemed to be at risk of contact with the disease can be immunised.
