What are some useful things to know when driving for the first time from canada to US. Any useful tips would be appreciated. Tips for the families with kids ages 10yrs-6 mons. Thanks

You do not say if the trip is just the drive or if there is a goal that you must meet.  If you are on a scenic drive, get off the interstate and take the lesser used roads.  There are many well maintained secondary paved roads that can take you to numerous interesting areas.  Pick a direction and go.  Read the road signs, each town or area will tell the traveller what their region has to offer you.  Stop and enjoy each area that you have chosen to investigate, have the older kids take pictures and make a journal that they can read to the younger ones later on.  On the other hand, if you are in a hurry and have a goal, you will almost have to stick to the interstate, so make the best of it.  You can plan your stops at interesting areas along the interstate maybe let the older children make a decision on where the next stop should be.  Teach them how to read a map and give you the directions on what exits to take and what roads to look for.
