i've read that wellbutrin works for depression and mood swings, severe pms symptoms, and I have some (i took it for about a year after a famly member died, then was told I could taper off the dose and eventually stop) so now, I have about 6 or 7 low dose (i think) pills, and have been experiencing baad mood swings, etc, for the past few days. i want it to stop soo badly :( so i think im supposed to get my period saturday, and if i take the Wellbutrin from now until then, do you think it would have any affect?

i've done a little web research with anti-depressants and these symptoms of pms, and heard that some are actually prescribed for it.

  1. Antidepressants are indeed useful for PMS sufferers, but I would be cautious with self starting and stopping them.  You should not take the wellbutrin if you plan to stop it once you are feeling better and have had your period.  That would be dangerous.  If you decide to restart it to help with PMS symptoms, you should go see your doctor and have someone monitor your symptoms so that after a few cycles you know if that is the correct medication to treat your symptoms.

From my battle with sever PMS I have learned that omega 3 oils, eliminating refined foods and sugars, and a high fiber...low fat diet are really the best way to go.  That type of eating lowers estrogen levels, and PMS is the result of high estrogen levels that are not appropriately balanced by progesterone.  Here is some info on the estrogen lowering diet:

  2. You may have PMDD, so Yaz or Yasmin could really help you.  If none of those birth control pills work, then you should try anti-depressants.

Here's a website on PMDD, a severe form of PMS:

  3. My wife took wellbutrin for depression and it really, REALLY worked for her.  Plus, it is prescribed to people looking to quit smoking.  Not all people are the same, but in my experience, it was a good drug.  I've heard that stratera* (spelling) is a better anti-depressant though
