I am certain you mean the color of the png background never matching foreground elements?

You can use pngcrush (dos based command line utility) to remove the "gamma" segment from a PNG; which is not needed, but does confuse the IE6 web browser.

No. IE6 is notoriously bad at PNG's. A fix would require every IE6 user in the world to download it.

If IE6 users are that important don't use PNG's.
