  1. Polk RTi 4

You'll love them.  When you don't need them for surrounds anymore, they make excellent bookshelf speakers and don't cost anywhere near as much as Paradigm and B&W.  I have had mine for a few years now and I got them for a great price.  They are right about surrounds not needing to be as good as your fronts and center but if you are sticking with polk, RTi 4!!!!

BTW, my home theater consists of Definitive Technology speakers.  I swear by them.  But I love my Polks too.  Paradigm and B&W are really nice but super pricey!

  2. Unlike the front three speakers, that must produce sharply focused images, the job of surround channels is to envelop the audience in diffused sound known as "ambience." To excel at this job, rear speakers should not (with the exception of localized 5.1 channel effects) call attention to themselves as sources of sound.

For these reasons, surround speakers work best when elevated at least two feet above the seated listeners' heads (a height of six to seven feet above the ground is considered normal), and mounted on the side walls in line with or slightly behind the listener. If you are using front-firing speakers, they should face each other so that the sound is projected over the listeners' heads.

So to answer your question Polk recommends the Monitor 50 be used in conjunction with the CS1 for the center ch. and the Monitor 30's as the surround.

  3. that varies on price.  I have and love my paradigm speakers.  I would not trade them for just about anything.  Also B&W speakers are some of the best you will every hear.

I have also had Polks and they are outstanding speakers, but be sure to listen to them with the types of sounds you want to hear from them (i.e. chase scenes, action films, etc..)  That is the only true way to find out if you like it.  Plus your room accoustics will make certain speakers sound totally different than what you hear in the stores too.
