My credit report was stained with a minor thing that I cleared up. I am 24 and when I was 19 I got a traffic ticket in Canada. I paid the thing as soon as I could, which was a couple of months late. They reported me to a collection agency. I guess they figured I had no reason to pay and that since I live in the U.S. I wouldn't pay so that is how they handled the situation. I didn't find out until I was 23 and had it wiped off my credit report (except I just found out a year later that Experian did not wipe it off my report so I filed a dispute with them)

Anyways, with this stain on my report, I was approved of a $1000 limit with Merrill Lynch and a measly $400 with Best Buy.

I was thinking about getting a Discover Card, but first waiting until I get a response from Experian.

What was your credit limits when you first got approved???

  1. I was approved for 1,000 and had a score in the 720's. I've had it for a year and they raised it to 1,500 so it's slow going.

  2. be careful with Discover, they give you high limits, when I was 18 with excellent credit they approved me for $6000

  3. it was 500 dollars when i started

  4. Applying for multiple credit cards within a short timeframe will bring down your score.  Hold off at least 6 months before you apply for more credit cards.

Also, you need to use all those cards on a regular basis.  Some, Discover in particular, will close the account for inactivity.  Also, if you don't use them you won't have a payment history, which is how you build a good credit score.
