  1. 1 Barry Sanders, Detroit Lions: One of the biggest tradgedies in the history of the NFL is that the Lion organization was so inept that Barry Sanders chose to retire in his prime rather than to play another game for Detroit. Sure, Emmitt Smith is the all-time leading rusher but if Barry Sanders had stayed motivated and the Lions had stayed competitive, Emmitt would never have touched Barry's final totals.

#2 Jim Brown, Cleveland Browns. Probably the best pure football player to ever play the position. Power, Speed, and desire. He too left when he was on top.

#3 O.J. Simpson, Buffalo Bills. No matter what he devolved into as a man, as a player Simpson was one of the most gifted atheletes ever... speed and elusiveness that became the prototype for the modern-day running back.

#4 Gayle Sayers, Cleveland Browns. Injuries forced him out of the game at his prime but Gayle Sayers may have been the best ever if he had avoided knee problems.

#5 Marcus Allen, Oakland Raiders/Kansas City Chiefs. An incredible talent that ushered in the the era of the pass-catching running back and became such a weapon that in his prime he could not be stopped. Allen had an incredible nose for the end zone and his performance in Super Bowl XVIII remains one of the most spectacular single-game performances in NFL history. Running afoul of Raider owner Al Davis cost Allen 3 years of his prime as he was seldom used until he eventually landed in Kansas City where he proved that he still had the ability to control a game as a running back.

  2. Asked many times. The answer is always the same.

    Jim Brown

  3. Well according to the numbers it was Emmitt Smith. However I believe Barry Sanders was the best running back ever because I never knew an NFL player who rushed for over 15,000 yards in just 10 years. It took Emmitt like 14 years until he got 18,000.

  4. Paul Hornung.

  5. barry sanders.

    end of poll.

  6. Walter Payton gets my vote, Barry was the most elusive, Emmit was the most productive, earl campbell the most powerful and I never saw Jim Brown, but Sweetness had the perfect combination of them all.

  7. E. Smith and Barry Sanders... Can't go wrong with either

  8. Sweetness

  9. Sweetness

  10.       Too bad that BO Jackson got hurt so early in his career, he was fun and exciting to watch.  I'm going to go with Barry Sanders as the all time best: Have you ever seen the defenses Jim Brown ran against they were a slow joke. Not many of those men would even get a tryout  now-a days.

  11. Hands Down: Jim Brown

  12. It's Walter Payton....Jeff B has it right.  Walter could also BLOCK which nobody else could do half as well.  He also played on just as many BAD teams as Barry Sanders.

  13. earl campbell, g

  14. Gayle Sayers

  15. walter peyton

  16. earl campbell...if that man wasn't so phsyical he would have had the rushing record

watch a highlight of him on youtube...simply a beast

  17. Larry Csonka !  Seriously, no one was more dominate in that era.

  18. i WOULD SAY BARRY SANDERS BUT HE'S A QUiTTER JUS BECAUSE HE WAS ON THE WORST TEAM iN HiSTORY SOOO i SAY EMMiT SMiTH
