Researchers seem to agree it could very possibly happen - but they are not sure what that means for all of us.....oh great!!!

  1. The magnetic poles move all the time.

There is a geologic record that shows it has happened many times in our past but not at regular intervals. Time between reversals can be 10000 yrs or a million years.

However - we know that the magnetic field does not collapse in the process - if it did, there would be major extinctions that correlate with the geologic record for pole reversals - there is no correlation.

The latest hypothesis is that the Earth's magnetic field gets chaotic, with lots of north and south poles - so we still have a magnetic field, but compasses will be useless. And then it straightens itself back out, but with north and south reverse.

This is actually similar to what the sun does - but the sun does it on a regular 11 year cycle.

As for when it will happen - those people that observe the magnetic field think it will go through its chaotic thing and reverse some time soon based on how it is currently behaving, but that is a hypothesis waiting for the event to occur to be tested, and the exact date certainly is not known.

Now for the rotational axis and its shift:

The axis of the earth does wobble on several known timescales. These wobbles are known as the Milankovic cycles.

    See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milankovic_...

Basically the axis of the earth’s rotation does not always point to Polaris (the Pole Star); and we are not always inclined at 23.5 deg. So the poles do move relative to the plane of the earth’s orbit around the sun, and relative to the stars – but the shifts are minor.

When shows on History Channel say "some Researchers" you will notice that (a) they don't say who; amd (b) they don't have any scientists doing this research on their shows to back up the claim.

On their Doomsday 2012 show, they blatantly misrepresent the state of research into shifting magnetic fields!

  2. polar shifts take place over thousands of years.. (although we are about due for one again, it doesn't bring about the destruction of the earth... it would be particularly nasty to a civilization like our own.... but lik ei said, they happen over thousands of years..)

somewhere along the line, people got polar shifts (which have happened, and will happen again and again as long as the earth's molten core remains.) with continintal shift (which hasn't been proven to of happened yet, and most don't think it ever even will... but it still does remain a possiblity seeing as how the crust floats on a sea of fire at all times....it's also relatively thin... look at a cut away of the earth again and look at the crust, that's the only rock solid peice of earth.. the rest moves constantly.)

"i doubt anything will happen iused to worry bout that stuff all the time just research that date alot more and youll see all the stupid theories people make up based on what?...Nothing. just a stupid calendar thats means ****. "

you obviously haven't researched anything into 2012 yet.... i on the other hand, have... it was where my obsession with knowledge pertaining to anything that could be linked to the end of the world came from...

2012 first of all, wasn't a doomsday handed down by the maya.... (anyone who spent 10 minutes researching into it would know this) second of all, their calander is stunningly accurate, both the prophetic side, and the time-keeping side...

btw, the mayans aren't the only ones to tie 'life changing events' to this current era (depending on culture, this sun cycle, this decade, this generation [as in family generations] etc etc..)

i think alot of this end of the world stuff mroe or less comes from the fact that we have just four books of their written language left (thanks to christianity) so we hardly know anything about them.... we know enough to know where they think they came from, a few ritualistic events, a couple of war-type descriptions (via a painted wall in a long lost building of theirs) their system for keeping time, and a number of the daily phrophecies they gave each day....

h**l, at frist everyone thought the maya were just peaceful astronomers obsessed with unlocking the secrets of the universe... but this isn't right... ti's infact, entirely wrong... they were incredibly savage/brutal to their war victims... every day the royal leader would have to make a sacrafice to the gods via blood letting (including the genitals) and they loved to get drunk.... they would drink until they literaly coudln't anymore, and then have people give them alcoholic enemas (i'm dead serious)

there's obviously alot of the picture we're missing here, and we'll likely never know it either...

if you have specific questions email me... like i said, i've done my research

  3. To slipknow: when the core finishes 'molting' will its feathers fall out?  LOL!

About 2012, its all hog wash!!! I really wish people would stop obsessing about all these end of the world predictions. The Mayans are long gone! So the fact that their calandar is about to end is really of NO signifigance!!!!!

  4. If you mean a magnetic pole shift or geomagnetic reversal, then this is something that takes thousands of years to happen and may not start for thousands of years. To pin it down to a particular day is ridiculous.

If you mean rotational polar shift, then it simply isn't going to happen.

  5. i doubt anything will happen iused to worry bout that stuff all the time just research that date alot more and youll see all the stupid theories people make up based on what?...Nothing. just a stupid calendar thats means ****. people say it says its marked as doomsday or whatever but in fact its just the end of a cycle or something, its like a year it repeats one cycle is a certain amount of years once its over it starts from the begening just like a year

and if something does happen with a polor shift which is the only logical theory that could happen i doubt alot of people would die it isnt anything to worry about
