  1. Is he kept on pasture most of the time or for several hours a day?  It may be a summer pasture associated form of RAO or heaves, which is an allergic reaction to allergens in the grass, and is fairly common in warm, humid climates.  Does he have a fever?  What are his resp and pulse?  If  the coughing is persistant you need to call the vet to rule out other respiratory diseases and to treat the RAO if that's what it is, as the damage can become permanent.  It will help the vet if you  know his vitals when you call him or her.

Edit:  What part of the country are you in (are you in the States?)?   You need to call the vet ASAP to rule out various respiratory diseases.  (If your trainer thinks it may be strangles - he'd be producing a lot of discharge - then she ought to quarantine him yesterday).   Since he's turned out 24/7 it could well be RAO related to allergens in the grass.  As I (and others have said) you need to have a vet check him out, ASAP.  Better safe than sorry.  Damage can become permanent to his lungs, if not treated.  It is not a good idea for him to be exercised at any level that would increase his respiration rate until he's checked out.  If he's coughing a lot, I wouldn't even sit on him.

  2. The only way to know for sure is to have a vet look at your horse.  If it is strangles make sure that your horse is quarentined.  Also ask the vet about Heaves or COPD.

  3. Like everyone else said...call the vet. He is the only one that will know for sure, because it could be MANY things.

You should always start worring when a horse has any color snot coming out of his nose accept clear. It could very well be strangles, which is very deadly, and very contagious. It could also be just a cold.

It is best to call your vet, and rule out the probabilities.

    Best of Luck.

  4. An old arabian what was owned by my trainer once had a sinus infection that got VERY bad. It was not going down where it was suppose to because it was blocked by the infection in the nose. It continued to get worse as the time went on, but - if I were you I'd just check up on the girl and see. If this continues for a few days (I'd say 2-3 depending on the severity) I would contact your vetrinarian and ask them to come out and examine your horse.

Tell them about what you think it may be (flu, rhino, strangles, infection) and ask them what they think. If he has a cold (which it could easily be) or an infection (a bit less likely, but could be) the vetrinarian should give him some antibiotic.

Honestly, this is my best idea. If it's only slight, it's probably a cold, but if it's a lot of green snot, it could easily be an infection. She had it terribly, and it went without treating for a while (this was an old instructor of mine who I no longer respect) and finally was cured.

    GOOD LUCK!

Edit: I would definately, DEFINATELY call the vet if he's been coughing for a while. This is probably a cold but I would have the vet come out and give him some anti-biotic and show you how to give him some yourself. This isn't something to take too lightly, I'd get him helped immediately. Good luck, and take care of your baby <3

  5. omg dont over-react...i remember when u asked this question b4 and like i said its JUST BEACUSE HE IS WARMING UP ALL HORSES SHOULD DO THAT AFTER TROTTING AND CANTERING...not as for just the standing still part ...okay well we all have moments when we have to clear out throat well thats most likley what happened and cuz horses eat grass it was green, if u cant handle a little horse snot then u shouldnt be riding...also if ur barn owner doesnt know this...thts SAD...of COURSE ITS NOT ANY killer horse diease etc. etc. if ur horse had strangles you'd know and you wouldnt b able to ride him and if he had the flu or a "cold" then he wouldnt be eating so chill...everything is normal...CALL UR VET IF UR REALLY CONCERNED but trust me its NOTHING if anything its a good thing...if he is just coughing but nothing is comming out then soak his hay... =P

  6. Call the VET!  Green means infection.  That won't go away...

  7. I would call the vet. Your boss might be right, it could be the flu, or rhino, or strangles. Also ask about heaves, my horse gets that from the dust in his hay so we have to water it down. CALL THE VET if you don't want anything to happen to your pony.

  8. Call a Vet. Asap. This could be very serious.

  9. You need to pick up the telephone and call the vet ASAP.  This does not sound like "nothing"
