  1. If your airplane burns 10 gallons of fuel per hour and flies at 120 knots, how far can you travel if your fuel tanks contain 50 gallons of fuel respecting legal fuel-reserve minimums?

    That's a pretty typical ppl-type question.

The answer is, of course 540NM because you are required to have a 30 minute fuel reserve, which in this case is 5 gallons.

The math itself is not difficult, and this isn't a test to make sure you can add.  This is a practical application of regulations, performance, planning, and general knowledge of airplanes.  This is a fairly simple question, and the ones on the PPL written are slightly harder, but you will learn how to manage them all.

  2. Very simple math, plus you can use an E6B flight computer and a calculator.

  3. you will be working with basic equations for time/speed/distance fuel burn etc. navigation and flight planing with known variables, weight and balance computations. All of these problems are solved using an E6-B flight wizz wheel or electronic computer as is now available. Don't let the math part scare you, after a little work with the E6-B you will find it is a snap. Here is an on-line version of the E6-B you can play with.

  4. short of using the E6B for time/distance/ fuel requirement etc.  the most complicated math you would do is weight and balance, if you can add, subtract, multiply, divide simple math problems, you will have no difficulty

An example might be... You are flying to a destination that is 500 Nm away , at a TAS (true airspeed) of 120 knots  and burn 10 gal/hr how long will it take and how much fuel will you use.

Or... the airplane has a gross weight of 2400 lbs, the empty weight is 1600, fuel capacity of 53 gallons (It weighs approximately 6.02 lbs per gallon at "standard temperature" - defined as 15 degrees Celsius )

Pilots weighs 155,  how much cargo/passenger weight  can you add before being over gross weight?
