PS2. I've connected a playstation 2 console to a TV (Amstrad widescreen) but it has no aerial

I've connected a playstation 2 console to a TV (Amstrad widescreen) but it has no aerial connected and I cant get it to work and wondered if an aerial was needed for it to work. It was previously connected to a small portable with its own aerial and it worked ok but now I've bought a new bigger tv I cant seem to get a channel for a picture.thanks
