PS2 internal memory ON PS3 40GB console

Hi, I'm Rob, just wanting to know what the "PS2 internal memory" is all about on the PS3 40 GB console.
I've also noticed that the 60 GB PS3 console has PS2 compatability etc.
As you may know the 40gig model doesn't play PS2 games.
