PS2 won't work. Blurry screen and text (even without a game inserted) The images are distorted and messy.?

I haven't used my PS2 in a long time.

Maybe more than 6 months?

I just boughtTekken 5 awhile ago and tried to play it but it shows up badly.

I can't see anything on the menu screen. All I see are black and red flashes. But the Namco, and Playstation 2 logo show up properly.

I've tried other CDs, ones that I've used to play, but the ps2 won't read them anymore. I've tried resetting thePS2 but it won't work. It says "please insert a PS or PS2 cd"

In short, the PS2 shows background graphics (the swirly things when you start up the ps2 are fine, same with the Playstation 2 logo) but it cant seem to properly display menu items (like the 'settings' and other stuff, i think it's 'CD device?')

any suggestions or ideas why it's broken and how i can fix it. friends are coming over, and we've been looking forward to playing x_x

maybe the wires might be loose in the connection? if not, then you there is something actually wrong with eh wires or the system.
